22 August 2025 - Zero VAT on School Supplies

As the new school year approaches, thousands of parents are faced with the high cost of school supplies. According to research by the Cyprus Consumers Association, the “Student’s Basket” shows price increases and significant differences in prices. Notably, in stationery items, increases of up to 38% have been observed, while the total cost for a family with two children can exceed €300–400 just for basic items.

Volt has already submitted comprehensive proposals for tax reform, aiming to support citizens and reduce social inequalities. Within this framework, we propose a zero VAT rate for all school supplies – notebooks, pencil cases, school bags, stationery – as an immediate, practical, and fair solution that will ease the burden on household budgets. Education is a public good, and indeed a basic necessity. Therefore, the imposition of VAT disproportionately burdens low-income families. Families should not be taxed additionally to purchase the essential learning tools for their children.

We remind that Volt, through its MP Alexandra Attalidou, has already submitted a proposal to Parliament for zero VAT on other essential goods, such as diapers and women’s hygiene products, demonstrating our overall commitment to stand by households and promote policies that strengthen social protection.

Cyprus needs a tax system that stands with its citizens, not against them. The abolition of VAT on school supplies is yet another step toward a fairer society.
