28 August 2025 - The Vasilikos Fiasco, a Shame for Democracy and Energy Management
The LNG terminal scandal at Vasilikos is not merely a failure—it is proof of a coordinated state of corruption, lack of transparency, mismanagement, and outright political incompetence. It marks the culmination of a decade of “bizarre” energy-related decisions that cost hundreds of millions, delayed the country’s energy future, and trapped the state in dead-end choices.

The energy investment that was presented as being of national importance remains stalled, as the floating unit is still in Malaysia without certification, while progress at the Vasilikos terminal site stands at only 40–45% completion—delayed beyond all reason.
Andromachi Sofokleous, co-president of Volt, stated:
There can be no doubt anymore that the Anastasiades government failed to carry out critical infrastructure projects for the country, leaving citizens and businesses defenseless in the face of the energy crisis. At the same time, the Christodoulides government is visibly incapable of managing what it inherited, claiming it received an ‘energy chaos,’ while earlier wrong decisions are resurfacing and suffocating the country in the ‘black smoke’ of cover-up.
Natasa Ioannou, coordinator of Volt’s Energy and Commerce Committee, declared:
Everything happened with the full knowledge and responsibility of those in power. We are not talking about invisible forces. We are talking about people with names, with positions, with offices, with signatures. We are talking about Ministers, Boards of Directors, Director-Generals, and all those who signed scandalous contracts, ignored warnings, covered up irregularities, and drove a project of national significance to today’s collapse. The state wants to know who made these decisions and why. And it wants to see accountability where it belongs.
Volt’s Position
After a summer of energy cuts and shortages, Volt in 2025 considers it unacceptable to still be discussing energy scandals.
We propose:
Support and full cooperation with the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO) investigations so they proceed to the very end, shedding light on all political and institutional responsibilities without exception.
Publication of all official documents, reports, and details—no “closed doors”—so society can transparently know who squandered public money and for what purpose.
Prosecution and resignation of all those responsible, regardless of party or position, to finally end the notion that political and energy power is a privilege without accountability.
