30 May 2025 - The Schengen Area should unite us. Not divide us.

Volt supports the Republic of Cyprus’ path towards full integration into the Schengen Area as an important step towards strengthening its European identity, free movement and security. At the same time, we consider it necessary that the implementation of this policy be done in a way that unites people and does not create new obstacles to free movement within the island. Therefore, we call for an implementation that is fair, transparent and sensitive to the unique realities of Cyprus.

Society needs clear answers:

  • How will the unhindered passage of citizens to and from the occupied territories be ensured?

  • What will apply to the spouses and children of Cypriot citizens who are not citizens of the Republic of Cyprus or the EU?

  • Will the Green Line Regulation continue to apply with the same flexibility?

The lack of information creates insecurity and risks of social injustice.

Thousands of Turkish Cypriot citizens, many of whom maintain daily contacts, work and conduct economic activity in the government-controlled areas, may be directly affected. Any restrictions will have consequences not only for the economy, but also for social cohesion and the prospect of peaceful reunification.

Moreover, for Turkish Cypriots who, although entitled to citizenship of the Republic of Cyprus, face practical and bureaucratic obstacles to acquiring it, there is a risk of exclusion from basic rights within their own country.

The Green Line is not an external border, but a ceasefire line within a single European state. The strict application of the Schengen rules without the necessary adjustments could create a de facto hard border with serious consequences for intercommunal contact and the hope of reunification.

At Volt we demand:

  • Immediate public information – Citizens must know exactly what will change at crossing points.

  • Independent impact studies – Decisions must be based on evidence.

  • Upgrading infrastructure and staff at crossing points to ensure humane conditions, equal treatment of citizens and avoidance of delays.

  • Guidelines from the European Commission to ensure the continued implementation of the Green Line Regulation and the protection of those provided for in Protocol 10 of the Accession Treaty.

The Republic of Cyprus, as a sovereign state and member of the EU, has the responsibility to implement the Schengen Area in a way that empowers its citizens throughout the territory. Accession must not become a pretext for new exclusions, but rather be used as an opportunity for a safer, fairer and more united Cyprus.
