2 May 2025 - The struggle of the Turkish Cypriot community against Ankara’s imposition is a struggle for all of us

The Turkish Cypriot community is mobilising against the authoritarian intervention, demographic manipulation and attacks on its secular and democratic values by the Turkish government. We condemn Erdogan’s visit and stand against any form of imposition of authoritarianism.

In recent weeks, over 13,000 Turkish Cypriots have demonstrated against these political interventions. The ongoing rallies demonstrate the resilience and determination of a community defending its rights and identity.

The Turkish Cypriot community is increasingly subjected to external control, which undermines autonomy, poisons political life, distorts the economy and intensifies inequalities. This fuels a system that benefits entrenched elites, while preventing Turkish Cypriots from living harmoniously in their own homeland, as a legitimate community of the island and reunited with their compatriots, under the same state umbrella and as part of the European Union.

As Volt, we say clearly that the solution to the Cyprus problem will not come through military parades or displays of power, but through equal dialogue, mutual respect and a return to the United Nations framework. The reunification of Cyprus is not only possible — it is necessary. Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots can only claim an independent and reunited Cyprus together, away from the current deadlocks.

Volt demands that European institutions move beyond statements of concern and actively engage all Cypriots as reliable partners, in order to change the unsustainable status quo. The path to a reunited, free and foreign-intervention-free Cyprus is also a European responsibility.
