A Solution is the only Solution
After nine years of stagnation following the tragic collapse of the negotiations at Crans-Montana, there finally appears to be renewed momentum on the Cyprus issue, allowing at least a glimmer of hope that the catastrophic outcome of permanent partition of the island can still be avoided. Naturally, the passage of time has not been without consequences, and the realities—both in Cyprus and internationally—are very different from what they were in 2017.
However, there is little value in dwelling on the missed opportunities of the past. We must look to the future and ensure that we do not squander what is, in all likelihood, the last opportunity to reunify our country. Attempts by certain circles to foster a climate of rejection by demonising specific aspects of a potential settlement before negotiations have even begun are doing a grave disservice to the people of Cyprus.
Everyone must understand that the choice is not between the Holguín proposal and the ideal solution each of us may have in mind. The real choice will be between the reunification of Cyprus and its permanent partition. It must also be understood that partition would bear no resemblance to the status quo to which we have become accustomed. It would mean a hard border with Turkey—one that we would be called upon to manage on our own, without the presence of UNFICYP.
Volt, as a bicommunal party committed to the peaceful reunification of our country, will continue to play an active role in the effort to achieve this paramount objective. We call on all responsible political forces in Cyprus to set aside short-term political calculations and presidential election strategies, and to rise to the call of history by ensuring that we leave future generations a united Cyprus.
