31 Αugust 2026 - Shipwreck in Kyrenia is a Tragedy
VOLT Cyprus expresses its sincere condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims of yesterday’s deadly shipwreck in Kyrenia. The catamaran “Filo Jet” sank yesterday approximately 2–2.5 kilometres off the port of Kyrenia, and it is estimated that, of the 267 people on board, only 241 have been rescued. Eight people have been confirmed dead, while 18 of our fellow human beings are still missing.
We are deeply shocked by this unimaginable tragedy and hope that there will be a thorough investigation into the incident and that those responsible will be held fully accountable.
We cannot, however, ignore the fact that, even in the face of such a tragic loss of human life, some of our fellow citizens — including elected politicians — have chosen to express satisfaction over this deadly incident and have made utterly inhumane and racist comments on various social media platforms.
We consider such behaviour to be absolutely reprehensible and indicative of a lack of empathy towards our fellow citizens. If we are to have any hope of reunifying our island, we must also confront the elephant in the room and stand firmly against the hate speech and racist comments that some people feel comfortable posting on a daily basis.
