28 January 2025 - From “Photovoltaics for all”, we ended up with “cuts for all”

While other countries exceeded 50% of total energy production from Renewable Energy Sources (RES), Cyprus is wasting thousands of kilowatt-hours daily, keeping electricity prices at very high levels.

The inability to absorb the electricity produced from RES, combined with the lack of storage infrastructure, leads to cuts in production. While pre-election promises offered consumers cheap electricity from photovoltaics, today they are making automatic cuts in private production with citizens watching the investments they made in photovoltaics for their households not yield the expected economic benefits.

Cyprus' obligations to address the climate crisis include increasing the share of RES in our energy balance, which provides for an increase in installations of photovoltaic systems. The actions of the Ministry of Energy focused almost exclusively on financing photovoltaic system installations, without the necessary energy storage infrastructure, smart solutions, and upgrading the grid for RES absorption.

This specific issue proves the inability of the institutions to implement a comprehensive strategy for citizens to have access to cheap and clean energy. It is inconceivable that, in a country with maximum sunshine, renewable energy production is lost, and citizens do not benefit from cheap and clean energy.

Volt calls on the competent institutions to proceed immediately to:

  •  Upgrade the electrical grid: Strengthening the infrastructure for the effective management of increased production and penetration of RES.

  • Investments in energy storage systems: Installation of central and decentralized storage units for the optimal utilization of the energy produced.

  • Integrated Energy Transition Planning: Promotion of policies that encourage the use of RES by households and businesses, with an emphasis on storage, self-consumption and the promotion of energy communities.

For Volt, the promotion of solutions that ensure a clean and efficient energy system for all citizens is high on its priorities and will continue to monitor the issue.
