16 July 2025 - Another Oil Spill in the Sea of Limassol

For the second time this year—and many times overall—our seas have suffered the consequences of mismanagement of local infrastructure and the indifference of responsible authorities. A serious oil spill occurred at Pentakomo beach yesterday, with swimmers emerging disgusted from the water and demanding answers.

Natasa Ioannou, member of the Political Council and Coordinator of the Environmental Committee of Volt, stated:

It is unacceptable for oil to be leaking from abandoned infrastructure in heavily industrial areas. But what is even more unacceptable is the attempt by the responsible state departments to downplay the incident and minimize both its seriousness and the significant environmental consequences that have resulted.

Fryni Onoufriou, also a member of the Political Council and the Limassol District Coordinator for Volt, added:

It’s high time that some people start reflecting on why citizens’ rights are so easily undermined by large private companies and the irresponsibility of state departments. We cannot continue to allow powerful economic interests to prioritize profit over public health and citizens' right to a clean environment.

As Volt, we remain committed to defending the environment and protecting our seas from all destructive human activities. We will continue to demand that the relevant authorities—both the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment and the Limassol District Administration—assume and fulfill their responsibilities, especially regarding the protection of our coastal zone, for which they are clearly accountable.
