6 May 2025 - Breaking the deadlock requires courage
As Volt, we believe that dialogue between the two communities is always positive. In this context, we welcome yesterday's meeting of the two leaders under the auspices of the United Nations.

However, the current impasse on the Cyprus Problem cannot be addressed with pleasant statements, repetition of trivial things and shifting blame to the other side. In order to escape the unacceptable and extremely dangerous status quo, political will and, above all, courage are required. Talks are not an end in themselves but the tool to reach a sustainable solution to the Cyprus Problem that will ensure a future of security and prosperity for all Cypriots.
As Volt Co-President Panos Parras stated:
We welcome the appointment of Ms. Holguin. President Christodoulides did what he could, to a certain extent. However, we believe that he must offer substantial initiatives that will transcend the barrier of separation between the communities, of which they are trying to respond with outdated confidence-building measures. We must move forward with initiatives that will essentially send the message to the international community that we are yearning for a solution.
We once said that Turkey would not attempt to recognise the pseudo-state. This attempt was made, and so many years have passed, with now the possibility of annexation being heard clearly. We see the international scene around us – how events can suddenly change, such as with the annexation of Crimea or other unrecognised regions within other countries – and we suddenly find ourselves faced with a precedent that will be detrimental and destructive for us.
We call on Messrs. Christodoulides and Tatar to realise the weight of their historical responsibility and to work honestly in the right direction.
