Announcement on the dispute between the Auditor General and the President of the RoC

With regret, we observe another episode unfold in the ongoing series between the Audit Office and the President of the Republic, reinforcing once again the inadequacy of politics and public life.

In a state of law, every citizen expects allegations, whether anonymous or not, to be examined, and public funds to be safeguarded for the common good.

Beyond the substantive findings of the Auditor General in the audit of the remuneration and benefits of Mr. Nikos Christodoulides as an Advisor or Consul General during the period from 14/04/2014 to 28/2/2018 when he served as Government Spokesperson, which we take seriously, Volt focuses on the broader aspect of the issue.

The possible misuse of public resources through tactics, even if legalistic, especially by officials whom citizens entrusted with the leadership of the country, demanding that they dedicate all their efforts to serving the public interest, clearly demonstrates the enormous distance we have to cover to reach a Rule of Law.

The war of statements between the Auditor General and the Presidency, the tactics regarding classified information, and the pretexts of exceeding the authority of the Audit Office constitute a blatant mockery of the intelligence of citizens and undermine any remaining credibility in the political system.
