Environmental Crime in Akamas
Volt Cyprus condemns the environmental crime committed with the government’s tolerance and complicity, while knowing very well that the legislation on Natura 2000 is above any national law or decision.
We fully align with the experts from BirdLife Cyprus, Terra Cypria, Cyprus Natural Coastline – Initiative for the Salvation of Natural Coastlines and the Cyprus Wildlife Society in demanding an immediate suspension of ongoing construction, followed by a survey and restoration of any environmental damage already caused, as well as a full reevaluation of the Akamas National Sustainable Development Plan.
We are deeply concerned by the stance of governmental departments which should have acted as guardians for the protection of Akamas. We do not understand the Minister’s reference to mere delays in the implementation of construction work without any reference to the violations recorded in the area by environmental organisations.
For Volt Cyprus, protection of the environment and fighting climate change are not negotiable, since they affect the people’s well-being and our future in this land!
