16 January 2025 - In favor of further opening of checkpoints
Volt fully supports the opening of as many checkpoints as possible in Cyprus. Every new checkpoint that is opened is a hole in the wall of division and a step towards the unity of our island. The policy that opposes the opening of checkpoints is destructive, perpetuates division, contributes to the creation of borders on the island and is in complete contradiction with the recommendations of the United Nations Secretary-General, as well as with the real interests of the Cypriot people.
We recognize that checkpoints are not just an improvement in everyday life, but a matter of survival. The opening of new crossing points is not only about reducing the time to reach one's destination. It is about connection, interaction, freedom of movement, economic revitalization and the creation of a common future for all communities on the island.
Those who choose populist rhetoric, proposing their closure, serve nothing but division. We believe that each opening option must be evaluated independently and without conditions that link one opening to another in the logic of exchanges. Roadblocks are channels of communication and cooperation and not objects for negotiation or bargaining, and each case is unique.
The opening of new crossing points will constitute a strong message of political will, especially in view of any broader meeting to resolve the Cyprus problem, as the UN Secretary-General emphasized in his latest report on the Good Offices Mission to Cyprus.
