The increase in threats, intimidation and targeting of journalists in the Turkish Cypriot community raises serious concerns about freedom of expression.
Recently, Bugün Kıbrıs journalists Ayşemden Akın and Emine Yüksel, were verbally attacked by some political figures in Turkey for the news they published, which was the result of their investigations into the underworld relations between Cyprus and Turkey. Shortly after the publications, their social media accounts were hacked.
The continuous targeted lawsuits against journalists are proof that freedom of the Press, thought and expression are being violated.
We will continue to stand against any kind of violation of human rights and stand in favor of society’s right to information. We express our solidarity with journalists Ayşemden and Emine and will be following this case closely.
