27 January 2025 - Golden Passports: The Minimum is Self-Exclusion
Following a recent decision by the Nicosia Criminal Court, the issue of “golden passports” and the handling they receive from the Legal Service has returned to the news.
As a political party, we do not express an opinion on the outcome or the handling of this specific case. We are, however, raising a serious issue of order that concerns society.
The leadership of the Legal Service – Messrs. Savvidis and Angelidis – consists of individuals who participated in the Council of Ministers of Nicos Anastasiades, the man who is being investigated for the issue of naturalizations by the Independent Authority against Corruption.
The least they should do to restore public trust in the institution they serve is to recuse themselves from all cases related to naturalisations or other matters handled by the Anastasiades Cabinet and assign them to an independent prosecutor who is not under their orders.
Volt supports a constitutional reform that would create an incompatibility in appointing as independent state officials, persons who have been members of the Cabinet. A minister by definition cannot be independent!
