28 March 2025 - It is a matter of democracy and respect of human rights
As Volt, we are deeply alarmed by the recent incarceration of Ekrem İmamoğlu which is an action that represents not only a grave injustice against an elected leader but also a flagrant attack on the democratic rights of the Turkish people. Ekrem İmamoğlu’s imprisonment is part of a larger and troubling pattern of political repression by a government that has shown increasing disregard for the principles of democracy, human rights, and the rule of law.

The incarceration of Ekrem İmamoğlu is not an isolated event. It is part of a broader effort by the current administration to stifle political dissent, limit freedom of expression, and manipulate the judicial system for political gain. The continued targeting of opposition figures, activists, and journalists is proof that political freedom in Turkey is under severe threat.
At this critical juncture, we stand firmly with the people of Turkey who are rising up against the authoritarianism of their president and the entrenched political elite. Their determination to demand justice, freedom, and a return to democratic principles is an inspiration to all those who believe in human dignity and the rights of individuals to shape their own future. The Turkish people, from all social levels, are speaking out against the suppression of their voices, and we support their fight for a more just and democratic society.
This moment of resistance is not only important for Turkey, but it resonates deeply in our country too. Turkish Cypriots have been facing oppression and injustice in the face of a regime that seeks to control and suppress their voices for over 20 years. These recent events may hold particular significance for the future of Cyprus. The people of Cyprus, both Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, have long sought peace, stability, and a functional and just solution to the island's division. But as long as authoritarianism persists in Turkey, it will remain a barrier to achieving true reconciliation and a lasting, inclusive peace we all demand for our island. Our hopes for a peaceful and democratic future in Cyprus are affected by the broader political landscape of Turkey, and it is our collective responsibility to ensure that Turkey returns to the path of democracy and respect for human rights.
This is a pivotal moment for everyone who values human rights, democracy, and justice. Now is the time to support the fight against oppression and strive for a future where freedom, equality, and peace are within reach for all.
