Antonis Papageorgiou was born in Larnaca, comes from Avgorou and lives in Oroklini. He is a primary school teacher, appointed to the civil service in 2009. He holds a degree in Primary Education from the University of Cyprus, a degree in Pastoral Theology from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, and a master's degree in Educational Leadership from the European University of Cyprus. At the same time, he has completed a four-year programme in Systemic Psychotherapy and Counselling. Since 2024, he has been on partial secondment to the Ministry of Education, Sport and Youth, serving as a Health Education Advisor in Primary Education. As part of his secondment, he has developed educational material on emotional education based on the film Inside Out, which has been approved and is officially used in Health Education lessons.
He has many years of social and scienti fic experience in mental health, human rights and social inclusion issues. He was a collaborator of the late Kostas Gavriilidis, Advisor to the President of the Republic on Multiculturalism, Acceptance and Respect for Diversity, contributing to the development of national policies for vulnerable social groups. Among his most important achievements is his decisive contribution to raising public awareness of the issue of so-called "conversion therapies" in Cyprus, as well as coordinating and implementing the first systematic research on the extent of the phenomenon in the country, in collaboration with the Greek scienti fic body Orlando LGBT+. This documentation was used in public consultations and contributed signi ficantly to the formulation of the current legislative framework, which led to the complete criminalisation of conversion practices, regardless of alleged consent, including practices under a religious or spiritual guise, making the relevant Cypriot legislation one of the most comprehensive and progressive in Europe.
