He graduated from the First Greek Gymnasium of Famagusta and, after completing his military service during the di fficult years of the Greek military junta, he travelled to Czechoslovakia in 1970 to study medicine at his own expense.

Many of his scathing and critical articles on political and social issues were signed with the pseudonym Lakis Koutzioulas.

He served for six years as a member of the Ethics Committee of the Cyprus Medical Association and as a member of the Committee for the Amendment of Laws and Regulations.

Since 1982, he has been based in Larnaca, practising pathology and cardiology. He is married to Christiana from Famagusta, a philologist, and has two daughters.
