10 December 2025 - A Volt Perspective on Human Rights Day

Human Rights Day, observed annually on December 10th, commemorates the day in 1948 when the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). Volt, as a pan-European political movement, stands as a firm advocate for these inherent and inalienable rights that belong to everyone, everywhere, simply by virtue of being human.

4 December 2025 - There Is No Other Cyprus

Volt Cyprus successfully hosted this month’s bicommunal meeting of Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot political parties under the auspices of the Embassy of the Slovak Republic at Ledra Palace.

10 September 2025 - Volt Statement on Israeli Attack on Qatar

Volt strongly condemns the recent military incursion seemingly carried out by the State of Israel into the sovereign territory of the State of Qatar. We express our deep concern at this serious escalation and condemn all shelling of civilians and destruction of infrastructure. This attack comes in violation of the good faith in the ongoing negotiations with Hamas for a ceasefire and the return of all hostages.

9 September 2025 - COLA as a tool for bridging inequalities.

Volt supports the institution of COLA and its expansion to all sectors of the economy. In fact, it is our basic principle, as well as the priority of the European Union, the need to expand collective agreements in all sectors, something that Cyprus lags behind other member states.

4 September 2025 - The illegal detention of the 5 Greek Cypriots as a result of the unresolved Cypriot case

Volt expresses its deep concern about the recent developments in the case of the five Greek Cypriots, that is clearly politically motivated, and their illegal detention, with the current detention of the Turkish Cypriot lawyer. Innocent citizens have been caught up in a political confrontation, a result of the long-standing non-resolution of the Cyprus problem.

It seems to increase wealth accumulation by 16% in two decades, not much was needed. Many super-privileges to attract capital - sometimes under-the-table, cutting labour rights, three successive governments, four political parties and a scandalous passport program.

The LNG terminal scandal at Vasilikos is not merely a failure—it is proof of a coordinated state of corruption, lack of transparency, mismanagement, and outright political incompetence. As the new school year approaches, thousands of parents are faced with the high cost of school supplies. According to research by the Cyprus Consumers Association, the “Student’s Basket” shows price increases and significant differences in prices. Notably, in stationery items, increases of up to 38% have been observed, while the total cost for a family with two children can exceed €300–400 just for basic items.

July 26, 2025 - Citizens Deserve Answers

Two of our fellow human beings have been lost. We once again express our sincere condolences to their families and loved ones. The loss of lives due to State failure is the primary and most serious issue—they were not a “collateral loss” or an “unfortunate incident.” We thank all the volunteers, individuals, firefighters, and organized groups who have shown that love for Cyprus does not allow for divisions.

16 July 2025 - Another Oil Spill in the Sea of Limassol

For the second time this year—and many times overall—our seas have suffered the consequences of mismanagement of local infrastructure and the indifference of responsible authorities. A serious oil spill occurred at Pentakomo beach yesterday, with swimmers emerging disgusted from the water and demanding answers.

Volt, in view of the vote next Thursday in the Plenary of the House of Representatives, underlines once again its categorical opposition to the bill for the regulation of public gatherings, due to the authoritarian provisions that violate the Constitution and the international commitments of the Republic of Cyprus.

9 July 2025 - Red card for the photovoltaic park in Lythrodontas – Kataliontas – Mathiatis. Vindication for the communities and the natural environment

Volt welcomes the decision of the Environmental Authority for a negative opinion on the construction of a photovoltaic park, with a total capacity of 180MW, in the communities of Kataliontas, Lythrodontas and Mathiatis. From the very beginning, we visited the area, listened to the concerns of the residents and stood by them, demanding the cancellation of the project.

7 July 2025 - Understaffing means no protection

The Volt Human Rights Committee expresses its deep concern about the serious understaffing of the Office of the Commissioner for the Protection of Children’s Rights. According to an official announcement, the Office currently operates with just three Officers, of whom only one can handle the numerous daily complaints about possible violations of children’s rights.

The recent (03.07.2025) decision of the European Court of Human Rights against the Republic of Cyprus in the case N.T. v. Cyprus highlights two very serious problems in the justice system in our country.

3 July 2025 - Volt supports the separation of powers of the Attorney General

Volt, as a matter of principle, welcomes and will support the bill submitted for the separation of powers of the Attorney General. We believe that it is paradoxical in a modern state for the same person to be both the legal advisor to the government and responsible for criminal prosecutions. The first role requires close consultation with the respective executive branch, whilst the second requires complete independence.

30 June 2025 - The coasts belong to the citizens

The recent approval of the environmental study for the “Aqua Residences” project in Larnaca, which allows for the “reclamation” of eroded land, constitutes a dangerous precedent for the coasts of Cyprus. This is a decision that threatens free public access to beaches and the ecological balance. In addition to the “reclamation”, serious questions arise regarding the ownership status of the land that will be reclaimed, as well as whether citizens will have free access.

26 June 2025 - Volt Calls for Review of the Public Assemblies Bill

Volt expresses its concern about the bill being proposed under the title “The Public Assemblies and Parades Law of 2025”. The proposed framework not only undermines the constitutionally and internationally guaranteed freedom of peaceful assembly, but also introduces provisions that raise serious issues of proportionality, legal certainty and the protection of fundamental rights.
