The recent (03.07.2025) decision of the European Court of Human Rights against the Republic of Cyprus in the case N.T. v. Cyprus highlights two very serious problems in the justice system in our country.

3 July 2025 - Volt supports the separation of powers of the Attorney General

Volt, as a matter of principle, welcomes and will support the bill submitted for the separation of powers of the Attorney General. We believe that it is paradoxical in a modern state for the same person to be both the legal advisor to the government and responsible for criminal prosecutions. The first role requires close consultation with the respective executive branch, whilst the second requires complete independence.

30 June 2025 - The coasts belong to the citizens

The recent approval of the environmental study for the “Aqua Residences” project in Larnaca, which allows for the “reclamation” of eroded land, constitutes a dangerous precedent for the coasts of Cyprus. This is a decision that threatens free public access to beaches and the ecological balance. In addition to the “reclamation”, serious questions arise regarding the ownership status of the land that will be reclaimed, as well as whether citizens will have free access.

26 June 2025 - Volt Calls for Review of the Public Assemblies Bill

Volt expresses its concern about the bill being proposed under the title “The Public Assemblies and Parades Law of 2025”. The proposed framework not only undermines the constitutionally and internationally guaranteed freedom of peaceful assembly, but also introduces provisions that raise serious issues of proportionality, legal certainty and the protection of fundamental rights.

25 June 2025 - Volt Demands Tax Equality

A report published today in “Phileleftheros” reveals that during the period 2021–2023, a total of 25,277 employees who relocated to Cyprus received tax exemptions amounting to €406.6 million. These figures confirm that the current system of tax incentives exacerbates inequality, creates a two-tier workforce, and selectively shifts the burden of public revenue onto low-income earners.

22 June 2025 - War in the Middle East

The developments in the Middle East are causing concern and anxiety. The recent US attack on Iran escalates an already fragile situation and brings closer the risk of a wider conflict, with an incalculable cost in human lives.

19 June 2025 - Subsidized Homes Worth Millions

The response from the Ministry of Finance to a question posed by Volt MP Alexandra Attalidou caused immense disappointment, to no ones surprise. Unfortunately, it confirms our worst fears about our government's social policy, which has become a hostage to deep economic interests and other political stakeholders, rather than genuinly benefiting the average citizen.

11 June 2025 - Harassment of press officers unacceptable

Volt condemns the sudden summoning of journalists to the TAE Headquarters, for broadcasts that hosted statements by the former Auditor General, Odysseas Michaelides. While we recognise and note the responsibility that comes with public speech, the event reveals once again the dangerous turn towards authoritarianism on the part of the Ministry of Justice and the Police.

5 June 2025 - Volt defends democracy and freedom of expression as a cornerstone of society

Volt condemns the withdrawal of the publication by the Cypriot participation in the Architecture Biennale, following the intervention of MP Pavlos Mylonas and the acceptance of this unacceptable pressure by the Deputy Minister of Culture, Vasiliki Kassianidou.

30 May 2025 - The Schengen Area should unite us. Not divide us.

Volt supports the Republic of Cyprus’ path towards full integration into the Schengen Area as an important step towards strengthening its European identity, free movement and security. At the same time, we consider it necessary that the implementation of this policy be done in a way that unites people and does not create new obstacles to free movement within the island. Therefore, we call for an implementation that is fair, transparent and sensitive to the unique realities of Cyprus.

27 May 2025 - Passports, entanglement and parties. And apparently they care about the credibility of the country

In the morning they boasted on TV about the passport scandal and in the evening they made a fortune from naturalised citizens and passport sales companies.

23 May 2025 - Volt's call to protest against the horrific crimes being committed in Gaza

26 May at 18:30 outside the Presidential Palace. Volt calls on everyone to join the protest against the ongoing genocide being committed by the state of Israel in Gaza, as well as against its open or silent support by governments, such as that of President Christodoulides.

22 May 2025 - Either we don’t have water or it’s contaminated!

The recent statement by Mayor Kourios about the use of different methodologies by the Republic of Cyprus and the British Bases – both for collecting and analysing samples – raises legitimate concerns about the reliability of the data given to the general public. Even more worrying is the admission, by a representative of the Health Services on the “Politis” radio station, that the samples are not collected from the same locations as those of the Bases.

22 May 2025 - Public universities do not need restrictions, they need prospect

The situation with foreign language programs in public universities has reached its limits. The same issue has been discussed for ten years without result. The need for substantive decisions is now imperative.

21 May 2025 - The Cypriot government turned its back on International Law. We will not do the same.

The Cypriot government refused to support the revision of the EU Association Agreement with Israel, despite the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, where according to the UN 14,000 infants are at risk of death, where the minimal aid allowed in by Israel is a “drop in the ocean,” and where almost all hospitals have been bombed. The Cypriot government said no to accountability, no to human rights.

14 May 2025 - Ex officio submission to the Finance Committee

The amendment to the legislation regarding the social relief measure granting a reduced VAT rate for the first residence was carried out with the aim of limiting the arbitrariness and abusive exploitation of the measure by non-beneficiaries, which we all saw take on scandalous proportions during the period of the "Golden Passports".

9 May 2025 - Bill to enhance transparency in credit agreements and protect debtors

Volt MP Alexandra Attalidou has submitted a bill to amend the Interest Rate Liberalisation and Related Matters Law, with the aim of substantially enhancing the protection of debtors and enhancing transparency in the financial sector.

7 May 2025 - Volt Europa: On the side of all Cypriots against Ankara’s interventions

In contrast to the empty resolutions for internal consumption and big words, Volt, with its real pan-European network, promotes the interests of Cypriots. Following briefings and information from Volt Cyprus, Volt Europe MEP Kai Tegethoff publicly stated his position regarding the recent protests that took place last Saturday in the occupied areas.
