17 April 2025 - Volt defends the obvious: Peace is the path to a solution

The “Breaths of Peace” event, a bi-communal music event organized under the auspices of the Mayor of Limassol on 25 April, aims to bring people together, not to legitimise regimes. Following the public statements made by members of DIKO, the Limassol municipal group of DISY and the entirety of EDEK, Volt considers it necessary to take a position.

16 April 2025 - Migration management is not achieved with populism, but with a plan

The Audit Office report published on 8 April 2025 to assess the management of migration in the Republic of Cyprus shows that the procedures for examining asylum applications are significantly delayed, with an average duration of examination exceeding 20 months, placing an even greater burden on the state budget. Realistic solutions are urgently needed, such as accelerating procedures, improving the interoperability of information systems and reducing bureaucracy.

15 April 2025 - Landmark decision to suspend work at the port of Pentakomos

The decision of the Administrative Court to suspend work at the port of Pentakomos, following an appeal by environmental organisations, is an unprecedented and positive development. The Pentakomos area, where the endangered Mediterranean monk seal relies on the vital habitat for survival, is being irreparably destroyed for the construction of a port for the purposes of servicing fish farming.

14 April 2025 - The Israeli government violated the cease fire. Europe needs to acknowledge Israel’s responsibility to bring forth true peace in Gaza.

The Palestinians in Gaza are “trapped, bombed and starved” according to a statement signed by 7 UN Organisations. Since early March, no trade or humanitarian aid has entered Gaza. In just the last week, more than 1000 children have been killed or wounded, the highest number of child deaths in a week during this year.

Every Easter, the same thing. A bill on bonfires that appears just before Easter, and disappears the next day — as if it were part of the custom itself. For another year, the crucial issue of public safety and social responsibility remains on paper.

In a country with periodic droughts, which knows very well what drought and water scarcity mean, the fact that losses in the water supply and irrigation network reach up to 70% in some communities, and 30% on average nationwide, is not just a failure. The situation yesterday was being observed with concern, highlighting two serious problems: on the one hand, the inability or unwillingness of the police to effectively manage a gathering with existing means, and on the other, the problematic reaction of the government, which chooses communication management instead of effectively addressing the problem.
