20 April 2025 - A 22-year-old dead. Uncontrolled fires. Injury causing firecrackers. Damaged property.

Is this the “tradition” we tolerate?

17 April 2025 - Volt defends the obvious: Peace is the path to a solution

The “Breaths of Peace” event, a bi-communal music event organized under the auspices of the Mayor of Limassol on 25 April, aims to bring people together, not to legitimise regimes. Following the public statements made by members of DIKO, the Limassol municipal group of DISY and the entirety of EDEK, Volt considers it necessary to take a position.

16 April 2025 - Migration management is not achieved with populism, but with a plan

The Audit Office report published on 8 April 2025 to assess the management of migration in the Republic of Cyprus shows that the procedures for examining asylum applications are significantly delayed, with an average duration of examination exceeding 20 months, placing an even greater burden on the state budget. Realistic solutions are urgently needed, such as accelerating procedures, improving the interoperability of information systems and reducing bureaucracy.

15 April 2025 - Landmark decision to suspend work at the port of Pentakomos

The decision of the Administrative Court to suspend work at the port of Pentakomos, following an appeal by environmental organisations, is an unprecedented and positive development. The Pentakomos area, where the endangered Mediterranean monk seal relies on the vital habitat for survival, is being irreparably destroyed for the construction of a port for the purposes of servicing fish farming.

14 April 2025 - The Israeli government violated the cease fire. Europe needs to acknowledge Israel’s responsibility to bring forth true peace in Gaza.

The Palestinians in Gaza are “trapped, bombed and starved” according to a statement signed by 7 UN Organisations. Since early March, no trade or humanitarian aid has entered Gaza. In just the last week, more than 1000 children have been killed or wounded, the highest number of child deaths in a week during this year.

13 April 2025 - Every Easter, the same thing.

Every Easter, the same thing. A bill on bonfires that appears just before Easter, and disappears the next day — as if it were part of the custom itself. For another year, the crucial issue of public safety and social responsibility remains on paper.

11 April 2025 - On the water that is being lost and the trust that is being evaporated.

In a country with periodic droughts, which knows very well what drought and water scarcity mean, the fact that losses in the water supply and irrigation network reach up to 70% in some communities, and 30% on average nationwide, is not just a failure. It is a collective failure of political leadership and institutional oversight. It is the epitome of institutional indifference.

On Tuesday 8 April, the streets of Nicosia were filled with over 13,000 Turkish Cypriots, in one of the largest mobilisations in recent decades. It was not just a protest. It was a strong, collective voice in favor of secularism, democracy and dignity.

8 April 2025 - Time for substantial changes in Social Welfare Services

The tragic incident of abuse involving five children in Larnaca highlights, once again, the chronic and serious weaknesses of a system that must protect the most vulnerable.

8 April 2025 - Visit of the President of the Republic of Cyprus to the USA and meeting with AIPAC." 4o

The recent meeting of the President of the Republic of Cyprus with AIPAC (American Israel Public Affairs Committee) – a lobby that finances political campaigns supporting pro-Israel policies in Congress and the executive arm of the USA, while at the same time openly opposing the International Criminal Court (ICC) – undermines our long tradition as a country that respects international law.

7 April 2025 - We plant for Peace!

This past Saturday, Volt participated in a highly significant environmental initiative, planting thyme in the shape of the international symbol of peace. The initiative was carried out in collaboration with the Municipality of Nicosia and individuals from both communities, sending a powerful message about the value of peace, coexistence, and cooperation at all levels.

4 April 2025 - Response to the U.S. Trade War with Strategic Autonomy and Sustainability

The U.S. trade war confirms that the EU must invest in its future and autonomy. The U.S. government is shifting towards protectionism, making unilateral decisions that disrupt global economic stability. From tariffs on steel and aluminum, to yesterday’s arbitrary imposition of duties across multiple sectors, and even pressure on Denmark over Greenland, this policy has created uncertainty and puts Europe itself at risk of recession.

1 April 2025 - In 2025 we reflect on the path ahead

1 April is not just the start date of the anti-colonial struggle. It is a reminder of the words of Kyriakos Matsis that “…what has value is that on this land live those who water it with their sweat, and walk on it free, as masters, as sovereigns”.

28 March 2025 - It is a matter of democracy and respect of human rights

As Volt, we are deeply alarmed by the recent incarceration of Ekrem İmamoğlu which is an action that represents not only a grave injustice against an elected leader but also a flagrant attack on the democratic rights of the Turkish people. Ekrem İmamoğlu’s imprisonment is part of a larger and troubling pattern of political repression by a government that has shown increasing disregard for the principles of democracy, human rights, and the rule of law.

24 March 2025 - Democracy does not work with blackmail

The situation yesterday was being observed with concern, highlighting two serious problems: on the one hand, the inability or unwillingness of the police to effectively manage a gathering with existing means, and on the other, the problematic reaction of the government, which chooses communication management instead of effectively addressing the problem.

21 March 2025 - Cyprus has been internationally targeted, yet some insist on bad practices!

Volt opposes the proposed law to exempt casinos from restrictions on cash transactions. As Volt MP Alexandra Attalidou correctly highlighted, Cyprus has been internationally targeted for transparency and money laundering issues, and this specific exemption not only worsens our image, but opens up even greater legal and ethical issues.

18 March 2025 - Another tragedy - this time out at sea.

For the past few hours, Cyprus experiences yet another tragedy, this time out at sea. It does not matter whether the tragedy occurred within or outside the territorial waters of the Republic.

10 March 2025 - Quality education is a right!

Volt welcomes the recent positive development for the construction of the East Limassol Regional High School. This development is a result of the dynamic mobilisation of parents and the pressure exerted by the local community.

7 March 2025 - Reform or convenience?

The latest appointments of 209 community leaders by the Government are nothing more than further proof that local government remains a means of serving party interests, rather than a mechanism for change or development. From the fact that appointments were made even in community districts with a minimal population, which already have a deputy mayor, we understand that we are talking about another episode of the farce in which the reform of Local Government is evolving.
